I’m delighted to be able to shine a light on and work with another, sustainably produced and organic, handmade, Irish product. The Flower Child range of Organic, Soy Scented Candles and Essential Oils, is more than just a product or a range, rather it is the culmination of the journey so far, of it’s creator, Alexandria Kelly of Tulla Lodge Farm in Co Laois.
Alexandria is a 25 year old gardener from the countryside of Laois. She created the Flower Child brand in 2021 showcasing her range of unique home Scented Candles and Essential Oils.
This range is far more than a simple collection of products, but it is a piece of the makers soul and spirit.
When I first heard about the negative health effects of burning those nasty, paraffin wax candles in the home, I immediately had to find alternatives. As someone described those candles to me, “the wax is a by-product of oil production. In other words, the what is left at the end of the oil barrel is used to make candles, it’s like having a car exhaust pumping fumes into your home”
My search for an alternative, Scented Candles and Essential Oils, brought me to Alexandria Kelly and what a story she has. We have worked together to develop my own, The Irish Gardener Signature Scent, harnessing the powers and beauty of Lavender, Clary Sage and Chamomile.
I had to include Lavender in the mix as it is one of my absolute favourite plants in the garden, for it’s scent and also for how it enhances the garden visually and sustains such a range of bees, hoverflies and other pollinators.
The Essential Oil of Clary Sage has calms the mind and reduces any feelings of stress and anxiety and finally, Chamomile also has hugely positive effects on mood and anxiety as well as helping to relax.

Growing up on Turra Lodge Farm, Alex has gained her inspiration for the brand and products from her passion for nature.
After both being featured on RTE’s Ireland's Garden Heroes in 2021 and struggling with mental health, Alex wanted to find a way to share what her garden has to offer and so the Flower Child range was launched.

A Word from the Maker – Alexandria, How My Health Journey Inspired a Brand That Has Changed My Life.
“The world of aromatherapy is relatively new to me, and so is that of mental health.
What I mean by mental health being new to me is that I didn’t always have such an understanding of what it meant to suffer from mental health issues before.”
Although Alex was experiencing it, with panic attacks and high stress levels she didn’t realise it at the time.
Since the age of 11, the time of her first epileptic seizure Alex has been on various medications.
Two years ago, Alex came off all medication and that was when she began to experience her unmedicated mind.
“My energy improved beyond belief and I felt a lot better for it. Now, with this unmedicated mind came a lot of emotions, and irrational thoughts.
It was like I had awoken a mind that was previously sedated.”
“Last Christmas my friend gave me the most thoughtful present I have ever received.”
That gift was a selection of essential oil blends to help with anxiety and depression. To Alex, this was the most considerate gift she could receive, “Not only was she trying to make my day brighter by giving me this gift but each day after when I used them to make my journey a little easier.
After using these essential oils, I began to see the benefits and explore the world of aromatherapy. From there I began making my own blends, experimenting with soy candles and sprays.”
