Add sculptural beauty, late-spring colour, and pollinator interest to your borders with this curated collection of my favourite ornamental Alliums. Carefully selected for contrasting height, form and flowering time, these bulbs work together to provide lasting impact in borders or gravel gardens, and return reliably year after year.

Whether you're planting in blocks for drama or weaving them among perennials for a more naturalistic look, this mix will bring a touch of elegance and wild charm to your garden.

This Allilum collection contains:

  • Allium 'Purple Sensation' – The classic choice, with rich violet globes on tall, sturdy stems. Reliable and early-flowering. (x15)
  • Allium 'Mount Everest' – Tall white blooms for contrast and balance. Looks stunning planted among grasses or against dark foliage. (x5)

  • Allium 'Christophii' (Star of Persia) – Lower-growing, with huge, spidery heads of lilac-silver stars. A real showstopper. (x10)

  • Allium sphaerocephalon – Drumstick Allium, deep purple and beloved by bees. Perfect for naturalistic planting and later-flowering. (x20)

  • Allium 'Globemaster' – One of the largest flowering heads of any Allium, with long-lasting blooms. (x3)

  • Allium caeruleum – Unusual sky-blue colour. Shorter in stature, it contrasts beautifully with the taller purples and whites. (x10)

Why grow Alliums?
Loved by bees and other pollinators

Rabbit-resistant

Architectural seedheads add interest long after flowering

Excellent cut or dried flowers

Reliable and low maintenance in free-draining soil

Allium 'Purple Sensation'
This classic is often the first Allium to flower, producing rich violet globes around the time late tulips are finishing. Reaching about 80–90cm in height, it’s perfect for adding vertical lift and blends beautifully with aquilegias, irises or early summer perennials. Easy to grow and reliable, even in poorer soils.

Allium 'Mount Everest'
A tall, white-flowered Allium that brings contrast and lightness to planting schemes. Reaching up to 1.2 metres, it’s ideal for the middle or back of a sunny border. Underplant with silvery foliage plants or low grasses for best effect. Combines well with 'Purple Sensation' for a fresh, classic look.

Allium christophii (Star of Persia)
One of the most striking Alliums, christophii produces large, open heads of lilac-silver star-shaped flowers. Slightly shorter at around 40–50cm, it works well at the front of the border or along paths. The dried seedheads are a bonus – they last for months and look superb left standing or cut for arrangements.

Allium sphaerocephalon (Drumstick Allium)
Later to flower, these slender stems bear oval, deep purple flower heads that emerge green and gradually deepen in colour. They bring movement and rhythm when dotted through ornamental grasses or planted en masse. Flowering in July, they extend the Allium season and attract pollinators well into summer.

Allium 'Globemaster'
A real showpiece. Produces huge, tightly packed purple flower heads on strong stems. Despite its size, it rarely needs support and stands beautifully among June-flowering perennials like geraniums, nepetas or peonies. Blooms can reach up to 20cm across and last for weeks.

Allium caeruleum
Something a little different – this small blue-flowered species adds an unexpected burst of colour to the lower levels of your border. At around 40–50cm tall, it’s ideal near paths, in pots or underplanted with low perennials. Great for bees and thrives in free-draining soil with plenty of sun.

How to Grow
Planting Time: September to November

Flowering Time: May to July

Height Range: 40cm to 1.2m depending on variety

Position: Full sun

Soil: Free-draining, avoid overly wet soils in winter

Depth: 2 to 3 times the height of the bulb, with the pointed end facing up

Spacing: Around 15cm between larger types, 5–10cm for smaller species like sphaerocephalon

Tip: Plant in clusters or swathes for the best visual effect. Allow the foliage to die back naturally after flowering to feed the bulb for next year.
