A Day Out for Plant Lovers: The Fota House Plant Fair is Back
There are few things that get gardeners as excited as the return of a proper plant fair – and this one, held in the stunning surroundings of Fota House and Gardens in Carrigtwohill, County Cork, is right up there with the very best. If you're a fan of fresh air, good conversation, and discovering plants you won’t find anywhere else, then make sure to mark your calendar for Sunday, 13th April 2025. That’s when the beloved Fota Plant Fair returns – one of the most anticipated Irish gardening events of the year.
Each spring, the Fota House Plant, Craft & Garden Fair draws gardeners from every corner of the country. And it’s not hard to see why. It’s not just any old garden fair – it’s one of Ireland’s largest and most established plant fairs, bringing together passionate growers, rare plant enthusiasts, artisan makers, and plant lovers for a truly inspiring day out.
Expect to find a wide selection of rare and unusual plants, many of which you simply won’t find in garden centres. With specialist Irish nurseries setting up stall, you’ll be able to browse everything from hardy perennials and alpine treasures to climbers, shrubs, and even native wildflower seeds. It’s a fantastic opportunity to stock up on special additions for your garden, whether you’re planning a full redesign or just want something fresh for the patio pots.
And for those who like to learn as they shop, you’re in luck. The people behind the plants, the growers themselves will be there to share advice and answer questions. It’s a brilliant way to pick up tips, especially if you’re not quite sure what will thrive in your patch. Whether you're new to gardening or a seasoned digger, you'll leave with more knowledge (and probably more plants) than you came with.
But the Fota Garden Fair isn’t just about plants. It’s a celebration of Irish craftsmanship too. This year’s craft and garden fair will feature a host of local artists and artisan producers selling garden décor, pottery, jewellery, handmade gifts, preserves, and plenty more besides. If you're after something unique for your home or a thoughtful gift, you’ll be spoiled for choice.
There’s plenty to eat and drink too, with a tempting selection of food and coffee stalls ready to refuel you after all that browsing. And if you find yourself weighed down by purchases, don’t worry, there’s a Plant Crèche where you can leave your new finds safely while you enjoy the rest of the grounds.
Of course, while you're there, it would be a shame not to explore the wider Fota House, Arboretum and Gardens. The formal gardens are a joy in spring, and the Victorian Working Garden is a glimpse into horticultural history. You can even take a guided tour of the House itself, making a proper day of it.
This is a family-friendly day out that’s as much about connection and conservation as it is about shopping for your next favourite plant. And speaking of conservation, it’s worth remembering that your €5 entry fee (plus €3 parking per car) goes directly to support the important restoration and preservation work carried out at Fota House and its gardens. So you’re doing a good deed just by turning up.
This year’s fair also includes a very special addition I’m particularly excited about – the Irish Bee Conservation Project will be on site with an interactive information stand. This brilliant organisation is working to protect Ireland’s native bees through habitat restoration, education, biodiversity mapping, and research. As gardeners, we know just how vital pollinators are – and the work being done by the IBCP is nothing short of essential.
If you’re interested in learning how your own garden can help local bee populations, be sure to stop by and have a chat with the team. They'll be sharing practical advice, offering memberships, and selling native Irish wildflower seed mixes to help boost pollinator-friendly planting. You can even support their work by picking up a book or becoming a member – a small step that helps ensure Ireland’s bees continue to thrive.
So whether you’re there for the rare plants, the local crafts, the coffee, or just a chance to soak up the atmosphere of a buzzing gardening event in Cork, the Fota House Plant Fair 2025 promises a fantastic day out.
Get there early, bring your garden plans, a tote bag or two, and maybe even a friend to help carry your haul – because you won’t be leaving empty-handed.
