A Collection for Shade, Natural Beauty and Pollinators

There’s a special kind of magic that happens in the woodland garden in spring. Where the low sun filters through bare trees and carpets of flowers begin to emerge. This collection brings together bulbs I trust and use regularly in my own designs.

What’s Included

Each pack contains a curated mix of shade-tolerant, naturalising bulbs, including:

  • Crocus in mixed colours
  • Anemone nemorosa
  • Anemone blanda (blue and white)
  • Erythronium
  • Scilla
  • Leucojum
  • Muscari armeniacum
  • Narcissus ‘Pheasant’s Eye’
  • Fritillaria meleagris (Snakeshead)
  • Native Irish Bluebells (Hyacinthoides non-scripta)

Why These Work So Well in Shade

These bulbs all thrive in dappled light – beneath trees, along the edge of paths or in sheltered borders. They’ll flower beautifully in early spring and will return year after year, often spreading gently over time.

Peter’s Tip

Plant these bulbs in loose drifts beneath deciduous trees or through mossy ground. Let them mingle naturally – avoid planting in straight rows. A handful of these bulbs, thoughtfully placed, can create a carpet of life that looks as though it’s always been there.

More About the Bulbs in This Collection

    Crocus (Mixed Colours)
One of the earliest signs of spring, these low-growing beauties flower in purples, yellows and whites – often poking through frost or even snow. Perfect for naturalising through grass or at the front of a shaded bed. Loved by early bees.

    Anemone blanda (Blue and White)
A woodland classic. These daisy-like flowers open wide in the sun and gently close at dusk. They spread slowly to form beautiful carpets over time and look especially good under deciduous trees or shrubs.

    Muscari armeniacum
Sometimes called Grape Hyacinths, Muscari form tight clusters of vivid blue flowers that stand proud above the foliage. They’re tough, reliable, and a great foil for softer colours. Will gently spread in most soil types.

    Narcissus ‘Pheasant’s Eye’
A heritage daffodil, prized for its fragrance and delicate beauty. White petals surround a tiny, orange-edged cup. It flowers a little later than most daffodils, extending the season, and thrives in part-shade.

    Fritillaria meleagris (Snakeshead)
These are something special – nodding, bell-shaped flowers in rich purples and whites, often with a chequered pattern. A real talking point. They love moisture-retentive soil and dappled light, where they’ll self-seed gently over time.

    Native Irish Bluebells (Hyacinthoides non-scripta)
Our own woodland treasure. These true native bluebells are scented, deep violet-blue, and hang to one side of each stem – a trait that distinguishes them from their hybrids. Plant in drifts for a stunning natural effect in shade or beneath deciduous trees.

    Erythronium ‘Pagoda’
Also known as Dog’s Tooth Violet, Erythronium brings a wild elegance to the spring garden. Its nodding, buttery yellow flowers are held above marbled foliage, adding texture and movement to shady spots. Perfect beneath shrubs or in the dappled shade of mature trees.

    Anemone nemorosa
A true native woodland plant, Anemone nemorosa produces starry white flowers in early spring. It spreads gently by rhizomes, forming a low-growing, flowering carpet that thrives in moisture-retentive soil. A must for any naturalistic or woodland-style planting.

    Scilla siberica
These bright blue flowers appear early in spring and are excellent for underplanting beneath trees and shrubs. Scilla will naturalise readily in grass or light shade, returning each year with minimal fuss. They offer a rich source of early nectar for pollinators.

    Leucojum aestivum
Sometimes called the Summer Snowflake, though it flowers in spring, Leucojum produces elegant, bell-shaped white flowers, each petal tipped with green. It thrives in damp soil and will happily naturalise in the margins of a shaded border or beside a pond.
