Large Family Garden Design, Monkstown, Cork
A generous garden designed to balance structure, planting and usable space, creating a cohesive layout that works for both everyday life and long-term enjoyment. Larger gardens bring different challenges. It’s not about filling space, it’s about organising it properly.
About This Garden
This was a large family garden in Monkstown where the overall layout was already in place.
The opportunity here was not to redesign the space, but to improve how it felt and how it worked through better decisions around materials and planting.
The existing hard surfaces were replaced with Egyptian limestone, bringing a much stronger sense of cohesion and quality across the garden. That alone changes how the space is perceived and used.
Planting then plays a central role. A combination of structure and softer, more natural planting creates depth, seasonal interest and a sense of continuity throughout the garden.
In larger gardens like this, getting the planting right is just as important as the layout. Without it, spaces can feel disconnected or unfinished.
The result is a garden that feels more settled, more balanced and far more enjoyable to spend time in, without needing to change the underlying structure.
