Why small gardens need structure first
In a large garden, structural mistakes can be absorbed. In a small garden, they define the space. Every plant is visible. Every wrong choice is obvious. And the margin for error is much narrower.
Without a structural framework, small garden planting typically suffers from the same problems: too many species competing, nothing in winter, plants that outgrow their space within a few years, and a border that never quite pulls together despite repeated effort.

What goes wrong without a plan
- Overplanting with too many species competing in too little space
- Poor seasonal continuity, with colour in spring but nothing by August
- No winter presence, so the garden disappears for four months
- Uneven growth, with fast growers swamping slower, more refined plants
- Lack of rhythm, with no repetition and no sense of composition
Structure does not mean formality. It means every plant has a role, a scale, and a relationship to what surrounds it.
When that thinking is applied to a small space, the result is a garden that holds together in every season, not just when things are in flower.
What works in a small Irish garden
Irish conditions present specific challenges that generic planting advice does not account for. Wind, shade, clay soil and wet winters are the reality for most Irish gardens, not the exception. Evergreen structure
Small gardens need year-round presence. Evergreen shrubs provide mass and backbone when perennials die back. Without them, the garden collapses in winter. See shrubs, trees and perennials for structure.
Controlled scale
Mature size is the most commonly ignored factor in small garden planting. A plant that looks right in a 2-litre pot can overwhelm a small border within three years.
Repetition and rhythm
Repeating two or three key plants through a small border creates cohesion. It makes a compact space feel considered rather than collected. More in border planting ideas that work in Ireland.
Common small garden planting mistakes
These are the problems I see most often in small Irish gardens. Almost all of them are preventable with a plan in place before buying begins.
- Buying plants without an overall plan, filling gaps rather than building a composition
- Using only short-lived perennials with no structural framework beneath
- Ignoring aspect and planting shade lovers in full sun, or vice versa
- No consideration of soil, particularly clay, which limits drainage and root development
- Planting too densely for immediate impact and creating future overcrowding
- No thought given to winter, so the garden looks unloved for months
